Expertly hand embroidered silk wedding vest/waistcoat is in very good condition, especially considering its age which is dated between 1820-1840. Vest has original silk backing which is a rich chocolate brown, though it is missing the belt in the back which usually fits the vest to its wearer. The buttons are finely woven and threaded with silk and there is even a name inked on the front inside panel “B. Cameron” as far as I can tell. Vest is in very good condition, some very slight fraying on the embroidery and on a small spot on the shoulder. Vest has been signed in a sepia ink on the inside; it says B.Cameron as far as I can tell.
In the 1840s, a colorful, embroidered waistcoat was a fashionable item in a groom’s attire. The waistcoat was occasionally worked by the bride, and presented as a wedding gift to the groom.
