Vintage Piedra y Plata Sterling Amethyst Tie Bar Felipe Martinez Pre-1948 Eagle Mark
Vintage sterling silver & purple amethyst cabochon tie bar made by Felipe Martiez’s “Piedra y Plata Taller”.
Martinez worked with Hubert Harmon in the 1940’s and opened his shop “Piedra Y Plata” in 1950. Martinez was originally an expert sculptor. His work is seldom seen, and is characterized by his seamless merging of stone with silver. Penny Morrill and Carole Berk in “Mexican Silver 20th Century Handwrought Jewelry & Metalwork,” write, “Because of [Martinez’s] interest in sculpture, each piece of jewelry is a unified composition. (He) integrated the materials he used in order to emphasize the totality of the piece.”
Because Martinez only produced his jewelry art for a few years, his pieces are very rare and should not be passed up.
Measures 2 7/8″ long by 7/16 wide. Marked “Taxco Sterling Martinez”.
