Damascene art Damascene (damascene) – the art of inlaying various metals into each other, most often gold or silver in a base of copper, steel or alloys. In general, damascenes reflect two distinct traditional types of design; Arabesque – geometric patterns, and Renaissance – motifs showing variations of birds, animals and flowers
This technique has a long history. It was used to make jewelry in Japan, was known in ancient Greece, Egypt, the Roman Empire, China. Damascus is still widely practiced in Spain, Toledo. Ancient art arose in the city of Toledo in the 9th-11th centuries. Also, the art of decorating products with notches made of gold and silver was known in ancient China. Later, it was adopted by the Egyptians, Greeks, and then the Romans, but they used fundamentally different technologies. In the Arab East, the skill of gold inlay was especially widely used in Damascus (where the name of this art actually came from – Damascus – Damascus). For many centuries, Toledo has been the center of a wide variety of crafts: from the traditional manufacture of carpets, gold and engraved products to the world-famous toledo damascene. Toledo was inhabited by gypsies, Arabs, Jews, Moors, Christians, a mixture of architectural styles reigned here: Gothic was adjacent to Baroque and other areas. In Toledo, you can see Arabic motifs in ornaments made by Arab artisans. This also explains the presence of Arabic elements in the Spanish Gothic (Roman) style. As a result of this mixture of Arabic and Christian architecture, a new style was born, called mudejar, which existed in Spain for a very long time, and its traditions are still alive today. The mixture of these styles is also reflected in Damascus products.
